NYC HHC Metropolitan Hospital Chiller Plant Upgrade

chillers

Construction Management services for the removal of two existing 1,100-ton chillers and installation two new 1,400-ton high efficiency variable speed chillers. The new chillers required the installation of new switch gear and variable frequency drives (VFDs) Adding a free cooling system utilizing a 2400-gpm. heat exchanger piped to and from the new chillers with required appurtenances.  The project also includes installation of 25 fan coil units (FCUs) in IT closets throughout the hospital utilizing the free cooling system for added energy savings.

Replacing the two existing 1,100 chillers without disruption to the facility and the rigging involved in removing existing and rigging new chillers during a sea wall project were the critical actions on this project.  Temporary chillers were utilized in a succession of locations to provide temporary cooling and accommodate the schedule of the sea wall work This required extensive coordination and planning.  Rigging the new chillers in during this construction required the same amount of coordination and planning as the chillers were being rigged in from areas under construction into the basement of the chiller plant through overhead doors.
